Leaf Patrol - first clean up

Much of Wheeldon Ave has had a tidy up thanks to Lyn and a few others. Laura did a great job on clearing both pavement and gutters. She volunteered as the leaf mulch is a major hazard for her in the autumn so wanted to prevent build up of debris.

It was very helpful that people who were unable to take part left their brown bins out so that the waste will be taken away for composting. Details of how to volunteer for future sessions are below as part of the original post.

See the difference!

Next Month - Date to be announced but will link in with Brown Bin collection again.

As the volunteers are going to be concentrating on clearing plants growing at the bottom of walls an cuttin back shoots at the base of trees, it would be great if residents without a brown bin of their own could sweep leaves from their section of pavement and gutter to go into the brown bins that neighbours are putting out for that purpose. Every little helps!

Initial Post:

It is lovely to live in an area with so many trees but street trees, obviously, lead to a build up of leaves on

pavements and in the gutters. With normal wet autumn weather, the fallen leaves turn into a horrible slushy mess. This doesn’t make life any easier for those with mobility issues and can also block the street drains.

Because of all this, Lyn on Wheeldon Ave has volunteered to coordinate a “Leaf Patrol”

It has been windy recently so there are some fallen leaves to make a start on and get the system up and running before the autumn. To begin with, it will start on Wheeldon Ave. Lyn is asking for people on Wheeldon Ave to help her sweep the leaves up there and, also, for other Wheeldon Avenue residents to help by bringing their brown bins to the front so that the leaves can be shared out.

She would be grateful if anyone wanting to help could pop a note through her door (number 16) with their

o       Name

o       Mobile telephone number, and

o       Their volunteer preference (sweeping, leaving bin out or both)

·She will then call everyone to determine a schedule / procedure that works for all of the group.

If you are interested in putting yourself forward as a volunteer, please pop a note into 16 Wheeldon by 12 noon this Bank Holiday Monday or email in and that information will be passed to Lyn

As long as enough people respond, the first sweep will be on Tuesday 25th as the brown bins should be emptied on Wednesday.

Initially at least, volunteers will be using their own outside brushes, dustpan & brushes and collection bags. NO BLACK BAGS WILL BE PUT INTO THE BROWN BINS as the leaves will be tipped out of the bag into bins.

The long term intention would be to introduce similar Patrols in the rest of Six Streets but let’s try to make it work in Wheeldon Avenue first and then we will have a workable prototype to pass on. If people on other streets would like to coordinate for their streets please email in and Six Streets will publicise that and help make it happen.
