FREE live funky jazz to listen to, dance to and enjoy. Tony Kofi leads a quintet playing Cannonball Adderley tunes.

This outside jazz concert with an incredible saxophonist and his quintet is all thanks to Derby Jazz Derby Jazz is producing INSIDE STRAIGHT as a gift for the people of Derby to enjoy as soon as as covid restrictions ease. It's their way of helping to raise the spirits of the people of Derby as we come out of the COVID pandemic. This will be free to enjoy though obviously in current times Derby Jazz would welcome donations.

One of the UK's top saxophonists Tony's a great student of jazz history and he's been researching the music of Cannonball Adderley who he thinks has been unduly neglected. Under Tony's leadership INSIDE STRAIGHT will be playing some of Cannonball's funkiest tunes, like "MERCY, MERCY, MERCY", "JAZZ SAMBA", "COUNTRY PREACHER" and of course "INSIDE STRAIGHT".

As well as his own UK bands, Tony is one of a handful of UK jazz musicians to have won a worldwide reputation through his work with; The World Saxophone Quartet, Abdullah Ibrahim's Ekaya, Ornette Coleman, Jamaaladeen Tacuma and many more .

Tony Kofi was featured in BBC Radio 4’s Life Changing with Jane Garvey. He recounts how he started his career as a musician only after a near death experience. Listen to the programme here

Inside Straight features Gemma Fuller, from Leicester, on trumpet and drummer Andrew Wood, from Nottingham, keyboard player Matt Ratcliffe, from Wirksworth, and bass player Martin Spencer, also from Nottingham. They play together in Andrew's Trio and hold down the jam sessions at Peggy's Skylight.
