SIx Streets Defibrillator

Every 3 months a reminder email comes from The Circuit, the national defibrillator network https://www.thecircuit.uk/, reminding Six Streets to run a routine check on our defibrillator. This is on the wall of Markeaton Pharmacy and we are ever grateful to Krishnan and the team for not only hosting the unit but also paying for the trickle heating to keep the equipment in best condition.

The 3 monthly routine check is very simple - it only takes moments to open the cabinet, press the button, listen to the automatic message that the test is running before hearing that all is fine. Once in a while, the message is that the 9V battery needs replacing which is very straightforward. A little more complicated (and expensive at about £300) is when the battery that powers the electric shocks needs replacing (this is on a time basis even if the unit has never been needed in an emergency)

This battery was replaced fairly recently so we hope we have enough money to buy a new one again in 2027! The pads will need to be replaced this year (again on a schedule unrelated to actual use) which will probably be about £100.

If you would like to volunteer to be the person to carry out the 3 monthly checks then please get in touch.

FAQs:

How do I get hold of the defibrillator if someone seems to be having a heart attack?

Ring 999 and tell them the details and ask for the code for the unit at Markeaton Pharmacy, 126 Kedleston Road. The ambulance service will be telling you when one will arrive but your action in those vital early minutes can be vital.

Do I need to be a First Aider to use the unit?

Anyone can use the defib because the automated voice will take you through what to do. And don't worry the unit will only allow you to operate it when it is needed so you will only be doing good not harm. It is always good to be a First Aider because you will have more confidence if that voice says it is needed but the 999 call centre will talk you through it.

What do I do after?

Please return the unit to the cabinet as soon as possible. Six Streets will then make sure it is cleaned and ready for any future emergency.
