Do you remember when the Green had the posts and chains?
After my previous piece about the posts around the Green, I was amazed and grateful for all the responses and help. Thank you.
What has emerged so far is that the posts and chains seem to have been re-moved in stages. It seems that the chains definitely were taken to aid the war effort during the second World War and this would fit in with the air raid prevention measures installed on the Green at that time.
It seems that there were still posts without chains all along Mansfield Road and Chester Green Road still in place in the mid 1960’s but these were then removed by the Council, with some of them being placed behind the Cathedral and some on Folly Road. It has also been reported that some went into Dale
Road Park in Spondon.
I have been given copies of old photos of the Green showing the posts, one of which, interestingly, showed that there was a pavement along the outside of the Green along Mansfield Road. Does anyone remember whether this footpath was dug up before the grass was laid, or was it just grassed over?
I hope that this jogs a few memories. If it does, please get in touch. This will help us move towards getting the Green restored to its deserved glory.
