Wheelie Bin Matters

Derby City Council collects bins in our area on Wednesdays between 6.30am and 4.30 pm, practically speaking this means our bins have to be out the night before.

It is very helpful if (as far as possible) bins are not out very early the day before as the combination of parked cars, street trees and wheelie bins can restrict access for those with buggies/ mobility issues and bins on the pavements are always an issue for those with limited vision. Early evening onwards works fine. Similarly, it is great if you can take them in pretty soon after they have been emptied.

For most of us, the blue and brown bins go out on the same week with black bins inbetween.

If you can not put your own bin out then many neighbours are only too pleased to be asked and the council do have an Assisted Collection service.

From time to time, wheelie bins which are left out 24/7 on the pavements have been used by intruders to get over walls & fences or they can get blown over in high winds and block pavements/ cause obstruction on the road.

If you are not sure what waste can go in in each bin then please check the council information as this will cut the number of times your bin can not be emptied (the bin crew tag bins that have unsuitable stuff like plastic bags in a blue bin etc or if it is too heavy to be loaded up)

If your bin is missed and so are your neighbours’, then the crew should know (maybe their vehicle broke down or parked vehicles meant they couldn’t access a street) and they will return on either Thursday or Friday to empty them. So you do need to leave your bins out then. This council page has a list of outstanding missed streets if you ever want to check or let the council know your bin has been missed.

The crew will not return if you were late getting your bin out or if you were tagged and have now taken the offending item out of your bin - only if it was down to them that your bin was not emptied.
