The Walk: Duffield and Milford
Distance 6 miles
A particularly attractive walk to the north of Derby. First we will cross the fields to the River Derwent, before ascending high above the valley, following good ‘green’ and probably muddy paths to Holbrook. Here we will gradually descend to Makeney and the river before ascending again to curve round the Chevin Golf Course back to Duffield. We will walk through the village past the site of Duffield castle back to Duffield church.
There are three notable inclines - at the start, near Holbrook and then Makeney. Realistically some of the route will be muddy. The route is suitable for older children & adults. Young children who are too heavy for a backpack would find it too much. Dogs on leads welcome.
We suggest essentials for walks such as walking boots (if possible) or sturdy water-resistant footwear, layers of clothes, snack and drinking water. Individual walking speeds vary so each walk will have allow sufficient time to ensure everyone feels comfortable.
The most likely place to stop for refreshments is about halfway round, a dry stone wall approaching the Chevin so something dry to sit on may be handy.
If you would like to join us, please email in OR post a note through the letterbox of 54 Wheeldon Avenue. Please include how many will be in your party, your mobile number and if you will be able to offer car share. We ask for mobile numbers so we can contact you if you have not arrived by the start time. If later on, you find yourselves unable to join the walk please let me know so we don’t delay the start for the others.
We look forward to meeting you on the 1st May and hope we can make this a fun way of seeing what is on our doorstep, getting fit and meeting new friends.
