Derbyshire Police are offering cyclists in Derby further opportunities to have their bikes security marked for free.

The events are being held at Markeaton Park on Friday, June 21 and at the University of Derby, Kedleston Road on Monday, June 24

The scheme works by marking the bike with a unique code linked to the owner’s details on a secure database. If their cycle is stolen and subsequently found, this code can be used to ensure the bike is returned to its rightful owner and prove it is stolen.

The marking by www.BikeRegister.com is usually £12 but is being offered free by police Safer Neighbourhood teams.

PCSO Ibrar Raffique, who has arranged the events, explained: “The scheme is a real deterrent to bike theft as it allows us to know that the bike is stolen and who it belongs to. This makes it far more difficult for the thief to sell the bike on and allows us to be able to prove the bike is stolen when we recover the bikes from arrested suspects.”

The team will be at Markeaton Park Craft Village between 3.30pm and 5.30pm on Friday and then at the university between 10am and 2pm on Monday. Anyone attending to have their bike marked should bring with them some form of identification.
