Read Easy Derby - update
Following the Christmas break our first cohort of readers and coaches are now back up and running, each meeting twice a week. The feedback so far is truly heart-warming. We have another two reader coach pairings due to start this month and a further 6 readers already lined up for our newly recruited volunteer coaches who will complete their training in February. With more readers on our waiting list, we are actively seeking applications from potential coaches as well as additional funding to help purchase the necessary resources.
We're also excited by the prospect of an increased number of enquiries as The Repair Shop presenter Jay Blades is taking part in a new BBC documentary this week.
The programme follows Jay's journey as he faces up to the challenge of learning to read as an adult with Read Easy. Jay concealed his inability to read until he was in his 30s, after he struggled to learn to read as a child.
Whereas many have been too ashamed or embarrassed to come forward and ask for help we are hoping that this documentary will help break down barriers and encourage local people to get in touch. It really is never too late to learn!
