Wheelie Bin Collection

The council has been having issues with Blue bin emptying in recent weeks. Some streets in the area have only been affected once while a resident reports that every fortnightly service this year has been at least a day late for their street.

There are 2 categories of reasons for a blue bin not to be emptied:

  • It could be that there is a plastic bag in the bin or some other item that would contaminate the lorry load. Or it could be that the bin was not at the edge of the property at the time the bin lorry came by (the first bins are emptied at 6.30am so best put your bin out the evening before) There are more details here The council asks you to please take your bin in as they will not return to empty a bin when it is through no fault of theirs.

  • It could be that the whole street or your stretch of street is affected and that means that the lorry may have been unable to turn into your street due to badly parked vehicles or that shirt staffing means the council could not send a crew that day. The council website shows a list of these streets here The council says

“We will attempt to return to collect these bins as soon as possible.

Please leave them out for collection.”

It can be as long as the following Monday before a bin is empteid but hopefully it will be the next day. If your street is not already on the list then there is a form to complete here

Obviously any council Public Protection Officer (PPO) who is asking residents not to keep their bin out on the street 24/7 should check this list and not knock on doors/leave notes when it is no fault of residents that their bins are still waiting to be emptied.

The law says that councils have a mandatory duty to collect both the black landfill bin and the recyclable items in the blue bin. It does not specify how often bins are collected or that they have to be collected on the scheduled days.
