In Derby, the DRS ‘family’ provides aid and support – including weekly English lessons - and social activities for many young people in order to make them feel at home and integrate into the UK. The Derbyshire Refugee Solidarity charity gives all the young people a warm welcome in St Anne’s Church near to Six Streets area. www.derbyshirerefugeesolidarity.org .
The organisation was recently awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services and was featured on East Midlands Today on Wednesday 16 November. Also that week, the charity organised a trip to Carsington Water enabling the refugees to learn more about the British countryside and wildlife (especially the birds!)
Jenny, of Wheeldon Ave, laid the foundations for Six Streets Group over 15 years ago and, under the umbrella of Derby Book Festival, she has for the past 7 years been working with young refugees and asylum seekers who are studying ESOL at Derby College Improving their grasp of English is vital in accessing further study & employment as well as understanding the laws and customs of the UK.
