Blue Plaques - with a difference!

The Six Streets History Group is a small research-based group who do occasional projects, often linked to events such as the Arts Trail. In the past, they have looked at Six Streets residents featured in the 1911 census and they produced an incredible archive relating to the First World War. To see this information, take a look at the Local History section

And now? … read on for informatipon about the start of this year’s Arts Trail History Event

This year we are planning a Pop-up Blue Plaque Event and we have just learnt that we have secured a grant through Darley Board to cover the design and printing costs.

This project will be an adaptation of the well known blue plaques installed by English Heritage across the country which link a building with a famous person of distinction from the past. The Six Streets plaques will be temporary and they will be different!

We will be celebrating the lives of ordinary people who have lived in our area so more mundane occupations and achievements will featiure on our plaques. The people featured will be taken from documentary sources such as the censuses for 1911 and 1939 based on research the history group have already done, as well as anecdotal research.  We are aiming to give a snapshot of a broad range of residents to show a variety of ages, genders, occupations and status. Ordinary people who in some way stood out and deserve to be remembered for a range of reasons. There was a project in Walthanstow which you may like to check out

So if you have anecdotal evidence of some stand out past residents, please get in touch.

If people are interested in getting involved in an active way (no sitting listening to lectures in our group, I'm afraid!) then please contact Diane at 6streetshistory@gmail.com.
