Future Plans for 10 Derby Libraries

The plans to shut the 10 volunteer managed libraries have been delayed for a while following a recent council meeting before they announce their final spending plans for the coming year.

The council is looking to repurpose the buildings in ways that would benefit those neighbourhoods. Originally they said that no money would be available to support any community groups coming forward with proposals.

It is still not clear if in the final council budget, they may find some money to allow Derby to have a comprehensive library service as the law stipulates. Obviously these 10 libraries being staffed by volunteers has already saved the council money in recent years. It is not clear how any community group could afford to run a library without financial support from Derby Council.

The 4 lending libraries that are staffed by professional librarians and the Local Studies Library are not affected at the moment.
