Temporary Bridge - Darley Abbey

Possible Foot Bridge next to existing Mills bridge

The existing bridge has been inspected and it is very doubtful that it is economically repairable even for a short term " fix ". The City Council is planning the construction of a temporary bridge. There has been no offer of any funding from Crown Estates or central govt. In the short term at least, the council will have to fund this.

Companies able to construct temporary bridges are/have been looking at the site, looking for the right solution. The City Council is hoping to have this temporary bridge constructed and open to the public within 8 to 12 weeks. Two sites for the foot bridge have been identified. One just north of the existing bridge and one to the south near the cricket club.

The cost would be approx £450,000 to £ 500,000 including hire charges for the cranes needed for the installation. It is hoped that over the next two weeks a final site will be identified and a full site plan will be drafted ready for submission for planning, which is required by the Council, the Environment Agency and Historic England.
