The RESILIENCE QUILT 2020

Common Threads @ Framework Knitters Museum

Join us to create a quilt made up of individual creative textile responses to the unprecedented events and experiences of 2020.

We invite you to help us document these extraordinary times: create a textile quilt piece using images, colours, patterns, words, stitches and textures to represent the isolation, the worries, the gardens dug and flowers planted, the extraordinary  blue skies, the time we had to listen to the birds, the improvement in air quality, the amazing gestures of friendship, support and bravery; the uncertainty, the boredom!  Whatever you are doing, however you are feeling, whatever you are hoping for, sew it into a quilt piece.

The pieces will be stitched together into  a quilt and displayed at the Framework Knitters Museum, Ruddington, Nottinghamshire, www.frameworkknittersmuseum.org.uk

https://www.instagram.com/fwkmuseum/     The quilt will be assembled into a diamond pattern which has a strong significance for the museum: Ruddington was at the centre of the 19th C knitting industry and was known as 'the diamond village' because the knitters finished their work with a diamond signature. The qualities associated with the diamond also provide further inspiration for the quilt: tough, beautiful, resilient etc. Each diamond will interlock into a pattern and be, most importantly, connected.

When the current restrictions are relaxed we will run physical workshops bringing interested participants together to combine the contributions into a finished piece - The Resilience Quilt. It will be displayed in the museum on one of the framework knitters' beds, celebrating creativity and resilience in the face of hardship, both historically and in our current situation.

The project is led by Common Threads which supports wellbeing through creativity inspired by historical collections www.common-threads.org  https://www.instagram.com/com.monthreads/

The Resilience Quilt project builds on   previous Common Threads project the Recovery Quilt, created with more than 50 participants in response to the theme of recovery and PTSD – find out more at  http://www.common-threads.org/#/recoveryquilt/

This in turn took inspiration from Tracey Chevaliers' Sleep Quilt

How to get involved:

Create your textile piece/patch and post it to us by June 20 with the submission form below. So we can include your piece in the quilt, please follow the specifications below:

Shape:  a square / diamond with all fours sides the same size

Size: the stitched part of your square/diamond should be 6 inches/15cms  x  6 inches/15cms with an additional border of at least  1 inch/2.5 cm border on all sides

Fabric: medium weight plain / unbleached calico, cotton, linen or similar - natural fibres preferred, if possible

Colours: plain cream, 'natural' or off-white background, embellishments/stitching – pinks, reds, yellows, blues, browns, greys, greens. We suggest avoiding purples/oranges/lime greens and very bright colours as they can be hard to ‘match’ and we hope to create a harmonious assemblage of pieces which sits sympathetically in a historical setting!

Decoration:  anything that reflects your experience of recent events, as suggested above

Share your work and be inspired by others using #resiliencequilt on Facebook and Instagram
